Q3 Form 720 Deadline: File by November 2, 2026

Your Q3 Form 720 return is generally due Monday, November 2, 2026. The usual October 31 date falls on a Saturday this year, which gives most quarterly filers until the following Monday.

This is the return for July through September. If you haven’t finished it yet, start with those months’ records—not the October accounts you may be working on now.

You can file Form 720 online with Excise720 for $9.95 per filing. The fee covers the filing service; your federal excise tax is separate.

First, Make Sure This Return Applies to You

Form 720 reports certain federal excise taxes. A business may need it because of taxable fuel transactions, air transportation, manufacturing, environmental taxes, certain communications services, indoor tanning, or another activity listed on the form.

What matters is the tax treatment of the activity. Being a fuel business, for example, doesn’t tell you everything you need to know about a particular transaction. Check the category and rules that apply before calculating the amount.

There’s also a question that can come up after a quiet quarter: “We don’t owe anything this time. Do we still have to file?”

Possibly. If you previously had a quarterly filing obligation and haven’t filed a final return, that obligation may continue even when there’s no tax to report. Don’t skip the return solely because the balance is zero.

If you file only for the annual PCORI fee, that alone doesn’t require a Q3 return.

The IRS Form 720 instructions cover these requirements and explain the weekend adjustment. Special filing rules or applicable disaster relief may affect your deadline.

Get the Records Ready Before You Start

You’ll need your business details and the records behind the quarter’s figures. Keep this list short enough to work through:

  • Business legal name, address, and EIN.
  • Records for the activity reportable in July, August, and September.
  • Applicable IRS tax numbers, rates, and calculations.
  • Information for required schedules.
  • Deposit confirmations and other payment records.
  • Supporting documents for allowable credits or claims.

An earlier return is handy for remembering which sections to look at. It isn’t a substitute for checking what happened this quarter.

If your accountant is doing the filing, ask whether anything is still missing. “The records have been sent” and “the return is ready” can mean quite different things. A missing calculation or an unanswered question may be holding up the filing.

Send any revised figures clearly, with a note identifying what changed. That avoids having an old spreadsheet used for the return while you’re reviewing a newer one.

You don’t need to make the records look impressive. They need to be understandable: what the figure represents, where it came from, and which period it belongs to.

Check What Has Already Been Paid

If you made excise tax deposits during Q3, those payments still need to be reconciled with the return.

Some excise taxes require deposits during the quarter. Filing Form 720 afterward is a separate requirement, and the November 2 filing deadline doesn’t postpone the earlier deposit dates.

Look at the actual confirmations rather than relying on a note saying “paid.” Check:

  • How much was deposited.
  • When the payment was made.
  • Which taxpayer and tax period it relates to.
  • Whether the relevant amount has been accounted for on the return.

Suppose, as a simple example, your calculation shows $2,000 of tax and your records show $2,000 in deposits. The totals agree, but you should still confirm that the payments belong to the correct period and have been entered properly.

If they don’t agree, find the reason before changing the return. There may be a missing payment record, a duplicate entry, or a calculation that needs correcting. Ask your bookkeeper or preparer to help resolve the difference.

Filing Costs $9.95—Here’s What That Means

Excise720’s published price is $9.95 per Form 720 or Form 8849 filing. Reporting several applicable tax categories on one Form 720 doesn’t increase that flat filing fee.

The Excise720 pricing page includes guided preparation, applicable schedules, built-in validation, electronic submission, filing confirmation, and customer support. There are no separate per-schedule add-ons.

You’ll still need to deal with any federal tax balance separately. The service fee doesn’t cover tax, penalties, or interest.

Once your figures are settled, sign in to the Excise720 online filing platform and select Form 720 for Q3 2026. Complete the relevant sections and review the prepared return against your records.

Take a moment to check the business name, EIN, quarter, calculations, and deposits. Address any validation messages before submitting.

Then check the filing status. A submission receipt tells you the return was submitted; IRS acceptance is a later status. Keep the acknowledgment when it becomes available, and follow up if the return is rejected.

If a preparer submits it for you, ask for the filed return and the IRS acknowledgment. Those are the records you’ll want when you need to look back at the quarter.

Questions You May Still Have

Why is the deadline November 2 this year?
October 31, 2026, is a Saturday. The general Q3 deadline moves to the next business day, Monday, November 2.

Does October belong on this return?
Q3 covers July through September. Follow your tax category’s reporting rules; filing in November doesn’t change the quarter.

Do I need to file when no tax is due?
You may. Check whether your existing quarterly filing obligation continues and whether a final return has been filed.

Can I file electronically?
Yes. The IRS accepts electronic Form 720 returns through participating providers. Paper filing remains available.

What should I do if I miss November 2?
Address the overdue return and any unpaid tax promptly. Penalties and interest may apply depending on your circumstances.

If your return is nearly ready, finish the review while the records are in front of you. If something is missing, contact the person who can supply it. Leave enough time before November 2 to submit the return and follow up on its status.
